 MOON OVER BUFFALO

Over-the-hill repertory thespians George and Charlotte Hay are touring the backwaters in 1953 with tired versions of Cyrano de Bergerac and Private Lives when they learn that Frank Capra is expected at the matinee to consider casting them in his next movie. Meanwhile, a domestic crisis drives George to drink, new and ex-lovers appear, and hilarious misunderstandings and madcap adventures ensue in this comic romp of mistaken identities. Carol Burnett was nominated for 1996′s Tony Award for best actress in her comeback appearance as Charlotte Hay. Don’t miss the slamming doors and costume calamities in this farcical love letter to theater hams everywhere!

2011-2012 Mainstage Productions Announced!!!

In the madcap comedy tradition of Lend me a Tenor, the hilarious Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950′s. At the moment, they’re playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in reparatory theatre in Buffalo, New York with 5 actors. On the brink of a disastrous split-up –  caused by George’s dalliance with the company’s ingénue – they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does go wrong, abetted by a visit from their daughter’s clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing, caused by Charlotte’s aging – and hard-of-hearing – stage manager mother who hates every bone in George’s body.  Join us for an evening of hilarious slapstick, physical comedy, backstage hijinks and sword fighting that will leave you rolling in the aisles.

“Hilarious….building up its laughs methodically shtick by shtick….Ludwig stuffs his play with comic invention, running gags…and a neat sense of absurdity….Go and enjoy.” – New York Post

PLAYING NOVEMBER 17-19, 2011

Set in 1959 Boston, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, a detective with a secret affinity for musical theatre, investigates the murder of a Broadway-bound theatre company’s tremendously untalented star on opening night. Could the culprit be the hard-edged lady producer, one of the recently divorced songwriting team, the egomaniacal British director, or the seemingly sweet ingénue? Lt. Cioffi is on the case! … he may even have to question the ingénue twice.

This backstage romp features a dazzling musical score by the legendary team, Kander and Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret), and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.

What the Critics Said:
“A thoroughly entertaining new musical…a blissful, often very funny celebration of a bygone era, a theater world that has largely disappeared.” - Associated Press

“Curtains has, hands-down, the best book of any new Broadway musical in years…” - Talkin’ Broadway

“Delightful fun-ride of a musical. An evening of bountiful fun… the musical-whodunit honors the songwriters as great entertainers.” - The Record

“If you’re going to perform a song about the villainy of theater critics… you’d better have a critic-proof show. Luckily, Curtains, … is so delightful that this critic didn’t even mind being called scum. Here’s a return to old-fashioned musical comedy … The show has audiences cheering long before the curtain comes down.” - Theatermania
